How does the Allurion gastric balloon work?

You swallow the gastric balloon in capsule form. Once in your stomach, it will be filled with 550 millilitres of water and remain in place for 16 weeks. Thereafter it will empty and be passed out of the body in your stools. Hence no endoscopy (keyhole surgery), anaesthetic or operation will be required.

The gastric balloon will ensure that you feel full sooner and for longer. Meaning you'll experience less hunger and eat smaller portions as a result. There are no restrictions associated with gastric balloon treatment – you can do sports and exercise and there are no foods that are off limits.

Am I eligible for a gastric balloon?

You will need to satisfy a number of criteria:

You are at least 18 years of age.
You are not pregnant.
Your BMI is 27+.
You have not had any surgical procedure done on your stomach or intestines.
You don't have any swallowing problems.

There may be other aspects of health that could affect the treatment too. We'll look at these during a comprehensive intake session before you decide whether or not you'd like to go for the gastric balloon.
